Can real strategy games work on a phone?
Strategy games and small screens have always been an awkward fit. There's just a lot of information to show, and phones don't have much room. But a few games are figuring it out, and Iron Tide Command is one of them.
The key is pausable turns and smart zooming. When you can stop time to think and pinch in on exactly the part of the map you care about, the small screen stops being a limitation. You still lose some overview, but the tradeoff is workable.
Where it struggles is busy battles — unit icons crowd together and you'll mistap occasionally. On a small phone this is real friction. On a larger screen it mostly disappears.
My takeaway is that deep strategy can absolutely work on mobile, but only when developers design for the screen instead of shrinking a PC interface. When they do, you get long, satisfying sessions that feel out of place on a phone in the best way.
